Can you believe it? You are planning for your sweet little baby to turn ONE! It’s time to plant a first birthday cake smash session!! And it’s going to be so much fun. The first year flies by in the blink of an eye. This is such an exciting milestone and should be documented with some portraits that you will be able to reflect on for the rest of your life. The portraits will even be heirlooms as they are handed down to your child and then the generations to follow.

Raleigh cake smash photographer, Tonya Palumbo, specializes in these sessions. Cake smash and first birthday photography sessions are T&T Photography’s most requested and sought after collections. Having photographed over 1,000 cake smash collections over the last 9 years has provided me with experience that is unmatchable to help you through this process. The simplistic photography style allows us to really focus on the task at hand… capturing the sweet personality that you are falling in love with more everyday.

I work with each and every single client to plan a perfect cake smash session and or mini session that truly fits your vision. After your session is scheduled, the contract has been signed and you have made a $75 deposit towards the session, you will be sent a confirmation email. The confirmation will also include two links, one for a video that goes over all of the questions you probably have. The video will include everything from “what to wear”, where to get the cake, what to expect ( shhhh…. the secret is to never expect anything), and how the session and processes flow. You will also get a phone consultation with to chat directly. During that time we discuss design, set up and all of the final details. I am there to hold your hand through this magical process, so you can truly enjoy this and be present in the moment. Because THESE are the moments we cherish.

Scheduling 1st Birthday Sessions

(both cake smash and mini sessions)

I always recommend scheduling the cake smash and mini sessions for different days. There are several reasons for this. One of the most important reasons is to ensure your little one doesn’t get too overwhelmed/tired, and believe me, they do get tired. By scheduling the sessions on different days we can be sure to set the best scenarios for the best sets of portraits. Here is how it works, you schedule a cake smash session on a morning between the hours of 9am and 12pm (to help ensure we get them during a happy time and the sugar is long gone by bedtime). Then we take advantage of the beautiful light that the late afternoon/early evening has to offer for the mini session.

Planning a Cake Smash Session

It’s so important that you know what to expect in this session, including what you get with your investment. Every cake smash session includes a pre shoot consultation. This consultation is done over the phone or online and can take anywhere between 15 and 20 minutes, depending on what your questions are. It is during the consultation that we discuss outfits, design and our tricks to pull off a cake and how we can make this session memorable for all of us. The cake smash session itself takes anywhere between 15-30 minutes. After your session you will receive an online viewing gallery where you can select 10 images of your choice. I will then edit those images you have selected and digitally edit those images and return those images to you with the professional print release.

Where Does the Cake Smash Photography Session Take Place?

All cake smash sessions take place in my studio based in Holly Springs, NC. This allows me to control the lighting and offer a sanitary environment for you and the star of the show! Why don’t we do these outdoors? I am not a fan of having these sessions outdoors for a number of reasons. One is that being outdoors can be a huge distraction and most importantly, it is not sanitary. Being outside with a cake tends to attract the bugs and dirt.

When Do We Schedule the Cake Smash Session?

All cake smash sessions are scheduled for a morning, between 9am-12pm and are on a floating schedule. This means we roll with the punches that morning and meet your little one where they are at. We never want to wake a sleeping baby or try and deprive them of the sleep they need… I know this because I am a mother. I will address this question during the pre shoot consultation. We make that decision together to fit your needs.
